Gratitude is mindfulness
Mindfulness is defined as a state of being aware of something. These days more and more people are realizing the importance of mindful practices in optimizing focus, overcoming any type of stress and building a resilient outlook. This is where gratitude comes into play. Gratitude expands the CONSCIOUSNESS of a person. We see things with appreciation and understanding that everything can positively contribute to our lives. We shift to the mindset that allows us to notice and create value out of the current situation.
Since some people want to understand things as binary, let’s look at the opposite side. When we are not mindful, we believe things happen to us and we feel that we have no control of our own thoughts and actions. Gratitude is NOT only a feeling that comes and goes. Even if we say I feel grateful, the very essence of gratitude means that I CHOOSE to be grateful. Feelings are REACTIONS towards what we experience. Gratitude, on the other hand, is PROACTIVE. When I am grateful I take intentional steps to nurture the habit of recognizing things to be thankful for.
Whoa, big words.
Let’s give mindfulness a try at this very moment:
“I spy with my little/big eye... something I am grateful for…”
